Full Truck Load (FTL)

Full Truck/Trailer Load (FTL) or Full Container Load is term often used by haulage companies to describe large amounts of homogeneous cargo (enough to fill a standard container) that are to be delivered to a single consignee or destination.

Generally, a full container load of this nature will attract lower freight rates than the equivalent weight of part load cargo, although given that trailers can be in excess of fifty feet long, they do require a substantial amount of freight to make them economically viable.

“...a full container load of this nature will attract lower freight rates than the equivalent weight of part load cargo...”

A carrier that offers FTL services generally contracts its entire trailer-load to a single customer. This is as opposed to a less-than truckload (LTL) company that will mix freight from several customers into each trailer.

One noteable advantage that FTL carriers have over LTL is that the freight is never handled en route, whereas an LTL shipment may be transported on several different trailers and would therefore need to be consolidated or sorted during transfers or at the destinations. Since cargo is transported directly to the client, FTL consignments are generally delivered much quicker than LTL.
