Unit Load

A unit load combines individual items, or items in shipping containers, into single "units" that can be more easily moved and stored using a pallet truck or forklift. A unit load packs tightly into warehouse racks, intermodal containers, trucks, and boxcars.

A unit load is packaged in such a way as to enable it to be easily broken apart at a distribution point. This can be a distribution centre or wholesaler, or the cargo's final destination (retail store, warehouse, et cetera).

“...About two billion unit loads are in daily use in the United States of America alone (Source: Ward 1993)...”

Most consumer and industrial products move through the supply chain in unitized or unit load form for at least part of their delivery journey. Unit loads make handling, storage, and distribution more efficient, and can help reduce handling costs and damage by reducing the handling required of individual goods or packages.

A typical unit load might comprise a combination of corrugated fiberboard boxes stacked on a pallet or slip sheet, which is then stabilised with pallet/shrink wrap, pressure sensitive tape or strapping.
