Intermodal Transportation

Not all shipments travel exclusively by one means of transport. Oftentimes, especially with freight moving across Europe, it is necessary to move the shipment from rail to road, or via container ships or even by air.

The term haulage operators use to describe this kind of freight journey, where a consignment may begin on the back of a truck, but before it arrives at its destination, make the transfer to rail or ship, is called Intermodal Freight Transport Shipping.

“...this type of haulage is that it enables freight to be delivered faster, and can potentially reduce costs...”

Intermodal shipping is considered advantageous by some shippers because there is no handling of the freight when it changes from one carrier to the next. Pallets are used to consolidate many things into one easy-to-move container.

Because intermodal freight transport negates the direct handling of any cargo, it also improves the security of the load, whilst also reducing the possibility of damage or loss. Another key benefit to this type of haulage is that it enables freight to be delivered faster, and can potentially reduce costs to the courier (allowing it to be more competitively priced to its customers).
